Day 1:

Madurai to Rameshwaram (175km, 4 hours) - Morning train or drive from Madurai to Rameshwaram (one of four Char Dhams, Shiva pilgrimage on Pamban Island connected to mainland by iconic Pamban Bridge), cross Pamban Bridge (2km rail-road bridge, first sea bridge in India built 1914, blue waters on both sides, fishing boats, train passing alongside road creates iconic photo, central part lifts to allow ships), arrive Rameshwaram, check-in hotel, afternoon visit Ramanathaswamy Temple (one of 12 Jyotirlingas, Dravidian architecture with longest temple corridor in India 1200m with ornate pillars, 22 theerthams/holy wells inside temple for ritual bathing before darshan, devotees take bath in all 22 wells believed to wash away sins, Shiva lingam installed by Lord Rama, non-Hindus allowed in outer areas), evening walk on Agni Theertham Beach (sacred sea beach where pilgrims take holy dip before temple visit, sunrise and sunset beautiful), overnight Rameshwaram|
